Rhinoplasty FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age someone must be to undergo rhinoplasty safely?
Usually, it's 16 for females and 18 for males, unless otherwise adviced by the surgeon

Is the surgery done under local or general anesthesia?
The surgery is done under general anesthesia in the operating room of a hospital.
Under no circumstances it is performed on the doctor's office.

What is the duration of the surgery?
Depending on the surgery plan, from 2 to 4 hours. Don't trust doctors that claim it lasts less because they won't be doing a thorough job.

Can I eat, drink or smoke before surgery?
You should not eat anything for 12 hours prior to surgery and no liquids for at least 6. It is best not to smoke either. Of course, that doesn't mean that you can have a fiest the night before! The whole point of fasting is that you eat lightly and then not at all so there's nothing in your stomach. Having food or liquids in your stomach might cause pulmonary aspiration. There's a reason for "NPO".

Do I need to stay in the hospital?
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery. Usually, patients are discharged from the hospital on the same or following day.

Will I swell, bruise or feel numb?
Swelling varies from individual to another and to the procedure done. Most of the swelling subsides in the first week. The bruising is mostly around the eyes and disappears at the end of the first week. It will take several months for all the swelling to go down though. The tip will be numb for a few months too.

Is the surgery painful?
You will experience discomfort in your breathing as the nasal airways will be swollen and probably stuffed with tampons hence nasal breathing becomes difficult.Generally, there is minimal to no pain involved with rhinoplasty.

When do you remove the stitches?
Most doctors use dissolvable stitches that go away on their own after 45 days. Visible stitches are usually removed after 10-15 days.

Will there be a visible scar from the incision?
This depends on your procedure. Open rhinoplasty patients will have more visible stitches and an incision between the nostrils. Closed rhinoplasty patients will have no visible incisions.

When can I return to my normal activities?

Most patients return to work after a week or two. You will be able to exercise after a month but should avoid crowded spaces, team sports and any activity that could result in injury to your nose for a few months.

Can I fix my deviated septum and hump in the same procedure?
A properly specialized doctor will be able to correct both cosmetic and functional issues in one surgery.

Can I get a celebrity nose?
It would be unethical for a doctor to give you someone else's copy of a nose. Your result should be specifically made to fit your face and look natural. Make sure you have realistic expectations.

Remember that this information is general and you should always contact your doctor for further assistance because each patient is different.
